It depicts Paul and Virginia (Paul et Virginie), the protagonists of the novel of the same name written by the French Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre and published for the first time in 1787. The two, friends since birth, will eventually fall in love but after thousand adventures will end up both dying sadly: Virginia in the shipwreck of the vessel Saint-Géran, Paul shortly after because of the pain.
