This is the incredible Regal Horned lizard ( Phrynosoma solare ) from the desert of Arizona, USA 🌵 In all my years of working with wildlife, watching unique animal behaviours like this never gets any less exciting! Horned lizards have this amazing ability to be able to deter predators by squirting blood from their eyes into the predators face as I found out the hard way while saving this little guy off the road just before he was going to be run down by oncoming traffic. They can spray blood extremely quickly and accurately and can spray it backwards if attacked from behind. This is a completely natural defence mechanism of this species and this little guy wasn’t harmed in any way to get it to do this.
