The Vaporfly Next% sneaker has been hailed as a “super-shoe” that has helped elite runners shatter records since their release. But the sneakers have attracted controversy for their thick soles that incorporate carbon-fiber plates, said to give runners more bounce. Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge ran the first sub-2 hour marathon while wearing the shoes. Brigid Kosgei also used them to break the women’s marathon record. The sneakers have gained popularity with Japanese athletes as well.
